A question oddly prompted by Season 2 of popular TV show The White Lotus, this Art Project examines six of the most powerful pieces of art of all time, delving into how and why they are considered that way – is it money, politics, capital, aesthetics, social context, or simply desire? Featuring Modigliani, Klimt, Gauguin, Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns, and Leonardo da Vinci.

Fall 2022How does an image rebel? How does an artwork or artist transcend mere scandal and begin to erode something staid, turgid, established? Influenced by bell hooks’ 1995 book Art on My Mind, this Art Project considers seven artworks that have ‘rebelled’ against convention, form, content, canon, and the course of art historical discourse and criticism – including Dorothea Lange, Basquiat. Paula Rego, Ghada Amer, Danish Siddiqui, Tanya Habjouqa, and Andres Gonzalez.

Summer 2022Does the art “scandal” still exist? This Art Project, designed as an old-fashioned tabloid feature, explores eight artworks in the art historical canon that caused immense controversy when exhibited, in addition to what it means for an artwork to do so now – including Ingres, Picasso, Guerrilla Girls, Duchamp, Manzoni, Ai Weiwei, Warhol, and Tracey Emin.
